Level Select was a hidden feature in the earlier installments and spin-off titles of Sonic the Hedgehog series, usually accessed by a cheat code. In most games, the Level Select menu is the place where the Sound Test feature can be found and the player can also activate other hidden features such as Debug Mode. When accessing the Level Select screen, it features every Zone and its Acts, Special Stage, Bonus Stage or multiplayer exclusive levels in the game, which the player can commence gameplay from rather than the first level. Level Select, also referred to as Stage Select, Zone Select or Act Select, is a menu in the video games of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The menu design is later reused in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Level Select menu from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Note: You cannot hold the spindash down - you must release it in-between for another Badnik to spawn.

If you entered the code correctly, you will hear a sound.
Additionally, play the indicated music tracks in the listed order under "Sound Test" to enable the corresponding cheat function. To add Tails to Sonic, press Y while Sonic is shown under "Sound Test". To switch characters, press X while "Sound Test" is highlighted. You can even play as Tails and Knuckles against the secret final Boss. This menu allows you to select any level (including special stages), Sound Test, and fight the secret final Boss without getting all Chaos Emeralds. Once Debug mode is enabled using either method, hold X + A while "No Save" is highlighted in Mania mode to access the Debug menu.
Then, select Mania mode, highlight "No Save", choose the "Secrets" option, and enable Debug mode. Alternately, collect any 16 Silver or Gold medals from the Blue Sphere special stages to unlock Debug mode. At the title screen, quickly press Up(2), Down(2), Up(4) to enable Debug mode.
